Spotlight on Ward Manager Barry Martin

Ward Manager Barry Martin heads up our inpatient team overseeing the day-to-day management of our nursing, support staff and volunteers to ensure we continue to deliver high quality, safe, effective care for patients and families within our hospice 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

He’s been in the role just four months but has a long and varied nursing career spanning 18 years, and during this time he has worked in a number of our hospice teams, as well as in acute care and his most recent role was in Community Palliative Care team, so he has a wealth of experience in specialist palliative care.

Barry said: “It’s a real privilege to head up our Inpatient team. We provide a holistic package of care centred around our patients’ needs to ensure they receive the best possible care of the highest standard, to ensure dignified care.

“It’s also important that people understand that hospice care isn’t only about people who are at the end of life. We provide symptom management, where patients come in for our support and they then go home again. We’re able to support them to help manage their symptoms, and they are able to go home to achieve a better quality of life.

“After spending time in our care, they often choose to come back for their last days as they know that they will receive the best possible care, as well as support for their loved ones here at the hospice.

“Our staffing levels give us time to care for our patients and their loved ones, and I feel that the care we deliver is exactly what we trained for, everyone goes the extra mile to ensure we provide a good death.

“We recognise that our role is to be there when we are needed, and we don’t have strict rules about visiting, so families can stay overnight with their loved ones if they wish, that’s what makes it such a special place, nothing is too much trouble.

“People give great feedback to all of our services, and it’s lovely to hear that we’ve made a real difference at such a difficult time in people’s lives.

“If anyone is worried about coming into the hospice and would like to know a little more about what we do, they can contact me to arrange a visit by phoning 03000 213656.”
