A generous grant from Nationwide Building Society is set to make a lasting difference to patients at our hospice, helping fund specialist equipment that will improve comfort, dignity and quality of life for people receiving end-of-life care.
Inspired by the care St John’s Hospice provided to Nationwide employee Max Hudson’s grandad, Norman, Max and his colleagues secured an £8,252 donation through Nationwide’s Colleague Grant programme. The team had previously supported the hospice through volunteering and fundraising, and this is the second grant Nationwide has awarded, following a donation of more than £10,000 towards the refurbishment of the hospice café.

This year’s grant will fund two specialist hybrid pressure care mattresses with pumps and a tilt-in-space wheelchair, providing enhanced comfort and support for patients with complex care needs.
The advanced pressure care mattresses will help protect vulnerable skin, reducing discomfort and promoting greater comfort for patients. The tilt-in-space wheelchair will enable patients who would otherwise remain confined to bed to spend time with loved ones, access different areas of the hospice and enjoy a change of surroundings.
Carrie Gascoigne Mortgage Adviser at Nationwide Building Society, said:
“We’re delighted to have secured this funding through Nationwide’s Colleague Grant programme.
“St John’s Hospice provides invaluable care and support to patients and families across the local community, and we’re proud to be able to contribute towards specialist equipment that will help enhance comfort and wellbeing for those using the service. We know these items will make a real difference during some of life’s most challenging moments.”
Jenny Baynham, Fundraising Manager for St John’s Hospice, said:
“We’re incredibly grateful to Nationwide Building Society and their colleagues for this generous donation. This grant will help us enhance the comfort and quality of life of our patients by funding specialist equipment that reduces pain, promotes dignity, and enables precious moments with loved ones beyond the bedside.
“Small things can make a huge difference, and this support will help us provide those moments when they matter most.”
St John’s Hospice provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care for people across Doncaster and the surrounding area. As part of Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, the hospice relies on charitable donations to fund enhancements to patient care, facilities and services.
