Spotlight on the Cancer Information and Support team

Our Macmillan Cancer Information and Support team provide confidential advice and support to anyone living in Doncaster about all aspects of how a cancer diagnosis can affect their life.

With a wealth of clinical experience including radiotherapy, oncology, public health and smoking cessation, the team of six health professionals employed by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) can provide practical information and advice to help patients and families, as well as helping to signpost them to the support available to assist with its wider impact on their life, work and home environment.

Service Lead Jo O’Marr told us: “We’re here to provide information and support to anyone who wants to talk about cancer. Whether they’re worried about screening, have received a diagnosis, are receiving treatment, living with consequences of a diagnosis, or have a loved one going through this, we’re here to help.

“We can provide booklets and leaflets about cancer information and treatments, emotional support by phone or face to face with referrals to our counselling service if requested, as well as referrals to local and national services for help with legal, financial and housing advice and applications for benefits and finance (including grants).

“We can also provide practical information about living with cancer, for example, managing fatigue, work-related issues, diet, exercise and finances.

“For people who are worried about cancer, we provide information about cancer screening, recognising early signs and symptoms as well as healthy lifestyle advice to help reduce the risks.

“We can also support health or social care professionals who need advice and support for anyone in their care.”

The team is based in outpatient 1 at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI), Monday to Friday, between 9am and 3:30pm and people can either drop in to see them, they also visit GP practices, community groups and regularly go out and about on the health bus into Doncaster city centre.

Jo added: “We’re a free NHS service here to help you cope with cancer and avoid unnecessary crisis situations, so please don’t worry in silence, simply drop into DRI, pick up the phone, or email us and we’ll be in touch with you as soon as we can.”
